Mass spectrum of a made-up element

An example figure from the Mass Spectrum generator.

The mass spectrum of Element Q: a peak at m/z 20 labeled 90% and a peak at m/z 22 labeled 10%, with an answer key under the graph
The mass spectrum of a made-up Element Q with two isotopes typed in by the teacher: mass 20 at 90% and mass 22 at 10%, so students can’t look the answer up. They work out its relative atomic mass, 20 × 0.90 + 22 × 0.10, which the answer key under the graph gives.

Answer key

  • Element Q: relative atomic mass 20.20
  • Relative atomic mass: (20 × 90 + 22 × 10) ÷ 100 = 20.20
