Draw the missing peak: silicon mass spectrum

An example figure from the Mass Spectrum generator.

The mass spectrum of silicon with peaks at m/z 28 and 30 and the peak at m/z 29 left out, with an answer key under the graph
The mass spectrum of silicon with its peak at m/z 29 left out, for students to draw in. The peaks at m/z 28 (92.22%) and 30 (3.09%) are shown, so the missing isotope’s abundance is what’s left of 100%. The answer key names the missing peak and gives silicon’s relative atomic mass.

Answer key

  • Silicon (Si): relative atomic mass 28.09
  • Missing peak: m/z 29, 4.68%
  • Relative atomic mass: (27.977 × 92.223 + 28.976 × 4.685 + 29.974 × 3.092) ÷ 100 = 28.09
