Micrometer reading estimated to 0.001 mm: 6.847 mm

An example figure from the Length Reading generator.

A micrometer holding a cylinder, reading 6.847 mm, with a magnified view showing the datum line between the thimble’s 34th and 35th marks
A micrometer read one digit past its marks. The magnifier shows the 6.5 mm mark uncovered below the sleeve’s datum line, and the datum line about 0.7 of the way from the thimble’s 34th mark to its 35th, so the reading is 6.5 + 0.347 = 6.847 mm. The last digit is estimated, so 6.846 or 6.848 mm is as good an answer.
